What happens during an MRI?

A general outline can help you decide what you want the team to explain in more detail.

Before the scan

The team will review safety information and prepare you for the examination. Tell them about implants or medical devices and answer their screening questions. Follow the instructions they give you about clothing and belongings.

Positioning and scanning

You lie on a table that moves into the scanner. The position and equipment depend on the examination. MRI scanners make a range of loud sounds; staff provide hearing protection.

Ask the team what they need you to do. Some examinations include specific breathing instructions. A general relaxation exercise must not replace those instructions.

Communication

Staff operate the scanner from another room and monitor you. Ask how they will communicate and how to signal for assistance. Use the agreed method promptly if you need them.

Keep the unknowns as questions

Your scan may differ from a video or sound recording. Ask about the part that matters to you rather than trying to predict every detail. Check how you will receive the results with the team involved in your care.
