Open or wide-bore MRI: questions to ask

Different scanner designs may feel different. The right choice also has to meet the clinical needs of your examination.

Clarify what the center means

Ask the center to describe the scanner they offer and what your own position would be. “Open” and “wide-bore” are not interchangeable descriptions. Images online may show a different machine.

Ask about suitability

A more open design is not automatically suitable for every examination. Ask your clinician and MRI center whether an available scanner can provide the images needed for your referral.

Ask about support as well as equipment

You may still want to discuss communication, the equipment near you, and how to signal. A different scanner does not create a guarantee that you will feel comfortable or complete the scan.

Prepare for the agreed plan

Once the center has confirmed the examination, base your questions and optional rehearsal on that plan. Do not change or delay medically necessary care on the basis of a website comparison.
