Head MRI when equipment near your face worries you

Knowing what you want to ask about the equipment can make the conversation more specific.

Ask about the head coil

For a head MRI, equipment called a coil is placed around your head to receive the MRI signals. Ask the center to explain what theirs looks like and how it will be positioned. It is understandable to want that explanation before the scan begins.

Ask what you can see and hear

If it matters to you, ask about your view, any mirror or other comfort options, and how you’ll communicate. The equipment and available options vary, so do not assume a photograph shows what you will have.

Prepare one clear request

You might say: “Equipment close to my face makes me anxious. Could you explain each step before positioning it?” Adjust the wording so it sounds like you.

Keep your Main and Backup techniques simple enough to remember without a phone.

Keep the clinical plan with the team

The program cannot decide whether your examination needs contrast, which scanner should be used, or what medical support is appropriate. Ask your MRI team and referring clinician about those questions.
